PICTOURS OF CARNIVAL - SAMBA PARADE II - ready, get set, go!
Photo by Silviano for ipanema.com | All rights reserved. Todos os direitos reservados. Each samba school can take to the parade from 6 to 8 floats. They help illustrate the story that is told by the school's theme, and separate sections formed by groups of alas (people wearing the same costume).
No, we did not put the wrong photo here by mistake. In 99 one of the samba schools decided to use as inspiration Little Brazil on NY's 46th Street. The floats showed attractions like the Rockefeller Center, and St. Patrick's Cathedral. The effect from a distance was striking.

There are cranes to take people up and down from their perches on the taller floats. The destaque position is not for the weak at heart, as floats shake a lot when everybody else is doing the samba like crazy right under your feet. Bigger shoulder pieces are usually attached to the float, to avoid accidents (destaques sometimes tumbled over before this became commonplace).

Most sculptures you see on floats are made of foam, and plastic. They also use lots of mirrored glass bits to better reflect the light. Sometimes small pieces break and fall off. Marching on the avenue without your shoes on is a guaranteed way to end your night in the hospital.
